Siamsa welcomes two leading performers of trad Irish music!
Aidan Connolly, hailing from Dublin, has received widespread acclaim for his distinctive fiddle playing, and was nominated for Best Folk Instrumentalist at the RTÉ Folk Awards in 2022.
Bryan O'Leary, a native of Tureencahill in County Kerry, is widely regarded as one of the leading accordion players of his generation, named TG4 Young Musician of the Year in 2015, and is the grandson of the legendary Sliabh Luachra accordion player, Johnny O’Leary.
They perform regularly at concerts and festivals in Ireland and internationally, and are also active as teachers of traditional music through workshops, masterclasses and educational programs.
Their performances present the distinctive fiddle and accordion tradition of Sliabh Luachra - a rugged, upland region in Munster, Ireland, straddling the borders of counties Cork, Kerry, and Limerick - alongside stories and insights into the musicians who shaped the style.
They will also offer two workshops.

Our last Irish céilí of the year is coming up on Saturday November 29.
We are settling in well to our new home in St Kevin's church hall. The October Halloween céilí attracted a big crowd of 120 dancers, and the huge space accommodated everyone with ease. We would love to see a similar turnout this month. The latest news gives us hope that public transport will not be an issue.
With winter snow upon us, please remember to bring your dancing shoes. For safety reasons, no boots are allowed on the dance floor.

Because of the ongoing transit strike and the challenges it’s creating - especially returning home after class - the School's Board of Directors has decided to cancel all in-person classes at Collège Notre-Dame this Thursday, November 6th, 2025.
Online classes and off-site classes will continue as usual, so those aren’t affected.
To make up for the cancellation, we’ll be adding classes on Thursday, November 20th, which was originally an open week in the schedule.
This break will also give us a bit of time to set up some transportation sharing options to help everyone get around more easily. We’ll share more details about that soon.

The new season of Siamsa céilís starts very soon, on September 27, in an exciting new venue.
The new hall, at St Kevin's Church, 5600 ch de la Côte-des-Neiges, offers several important advantages. It is clean and modern, with a huge dance floor (able to accommodate our growing numbers of dancers) and is easily reached by public transit (métro Côte-des-Neiges, 165 bus). For those who come by car, it has a parking lot and convenient street parking. It is also accessible for those with mobility issues.

Hannah is a piano and concertina player, teacher and composer from Skibbereen, west Cork. She regularly performs and teaches at festivals at home and abroad and has recently played piano with Cherish the Ladies, as well as being a member of the All-Ireland winning Taobh na Mara Céilí Band.

Grosse Île and the Irish Memorial National Historic Site
Siamsa is planning a group visit to Grosse Île on Saturday, August 2nd, 2025.
We selected the afternoon sailing that boards at 11:30 AM and leaves at 12 PM.
It is crucial to arrive at Berthier-sur-Mer for boarding at 11:30 AM.
The ferry waits for no one and will leave on time.
We have looked at the possibilities from several different angles. We believe that the easiest option is to organize carpooling, and each book our tickets individually for the ferry that leaves from Berthier-sur-Mer. We ask that you complete this form below to indicate that you are interested, whether you have transportation available or not, and if you are able to help others with transportation. Finally, please note that there are no meal services on the island. Pack a lunch, or pre-order one from Croisières AML.

About Grosse Île
Located in the middle of the St. Lawrence River, Grosse Île was Canada's main immigration gateway and served as a quarantine station for the Port of Quebec from 1832 to 1937. Follow the footsteps of tens of thousands of immigrants who landed on the island and see the beauty of this special place.
Grosse Île also serves as a memorial to the tragic events endured by Irish immigrants here, chiefly during the typhus epidemic of 1847, when nearly 100,000 people, the majority escaping the Great Famine then ravaging Ireland, set sail for Canada. More than five thousand ended their journey buried on this island.

During her workshop, Kate will focus on:
- Irish style,

- Bowing technique,

This workshop promises to be a fun and rewarding opportunity to learn from an award-winning musician who is also a much-appreciated teacher with Siamsa.

IRISH DANCES & "OLDE TYME" SQUARES!
Friends! For the final event of what has been a wonderful season of dances, we have something different for you: two callers with two very different styles.
Familiar Irish céilí dances will be called by Caroline Wathier, and we also welcome Shirley Anne Smyth, who will bring us "Olde Tyme" square dances. Shirley Anne is a member of the Canadian Olde Tyme Square Dance Callers Association and has 30 years of experience square dancing and calling.
If you've ever danced québécois "set carrés", you'll feel right at home with square dances. If you haven't, don't worry: Shirley Anne is an excellent caller and will guide you expertly through the dances - which are a LOT of fun.
Plus, the Siamsa Céilí Band is breaking new ground, preparing new sets of tunes to add to the excitement.
Our regular caller, Bill White, is out of town on May 31, but will be back with us in September!

Students' Class Recital
For the recital, we will use a session "in a circle" format rather than a front-of-room performance. Classes should sit together. Each teacher will indicate how their class will perform their musical pieces and whether they will invite others to join in.
Class presentations from our students will be followed by a musical session at the end of the evening.
Please bring food to share in a potluck at the break!

The rainy weather forecast for the week-end has given us little choice but to cancel our participation at Porchfest 2025. We hope to see you all next year. Next week, May 24th, the regular Slow Session resumes at the Lord William Pub. You are all welcome to attend!
The regular Saturday Slow Session planned for May 17 will be outside in the open air in NDG instead of the pub.
Specifically, we will be at the home of a musical family who has graciously accepted to host musicians on their front lawn.

Manus McGuire will be visiting Montreal in April to present concerts and workshops celebrating the links between Irish & Quebecois folk music with a quartet of award-winning musicians. It features two expert Irish musicians:
- Manus McGuire, of Brock McGuire Band and Moving Cloud,
- Kate Bevan-Baker, of The Dardanelles and Gairloch,
and two master Quebecois musicians:
- André Marchand & Michel Bordeleau, both key members of La Bottine Souriante and Les Charbonniers de l’enfer.

About the artist
Manus McGuire is an Irish fddle player from Sligo, now based in East Clare. Growing up in a very musical environment, he was influenced by the region's fddle legends like Michael Coleman, James Morrison, and Paddy Killoran. Alongside his brother Seamus, he continues this rich tradition.
Manus has recorded solo albums, duos with Seamus, and with bands such as Buttons and Bows, Moving Cloud, and Brock McGuire Band.
He has received several prestigious awards, including Male Irish Traditional Musician of the Year in 2006 by the Irish American News and the Bravo Award from Trad Magazine in 2007. Manus won the Fiddler of Dooney contest in 1970 and is now dedicated to teaching intermediate and advanced fddle players.

Students' Class Recital
For the recital, we will use a session "in a circle" format rather than a front-of-room performance. Classes should sit together. Each teacher will indicate how their class will perform their musical pieces and whether they will invite others to join in.
Class presentations from our students will be followed by a musical session at the end of the evening.
Please bring food to share in a potluck at the break!

Explore the unique relationship between Irish and French Canadian styles and come out learning a couple of tunes.
Pierre will include the topics of bow technique and phrasing to help the fiddler produce a better quality sound.

Fundamentals of North American Dance Styles - Beginner to Intermediate level

Explore the fundamental moves found in most percussive dance forms including:
- Métis jigging
- Cape Breton step dance
- Ottawa Valley stepdancing
- French Canadian gigue
- and Appalachian flatfooting.
Dancers will learn a routine that incorporates elements from all of these styles.
Pierre Schryer will join us for the last 20 minutes of the class to provide live music.
Sean-Nós "old style" Irish Jigs & Reels - Intermediate to Advanced level
Time: 4 to 5:30pm
Cost: $20
Description:
A workshop focusing on the old styles of Irish dance, originating from the south and west of Ireland.
Learn some jig and reel rhythms, develop technique and style, and also improvisation.
Dancers will learn to listen to the tune and create an arrangement to compliment the music.
Pierre Schryer will join us for the last 20 minutes of the class to provide live music.
